Are you a young person aged 15 – 18 living in Victoria, Western Australia or New South Wales?
Are you passionate about the impact of drugs and alcohol on young people’s lives?
Would you like to join a Youth Council that will help to co-design a five-year research study?
Background
The National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre (NDARC) in partnership with Youth Affairs Council Victoria (YACVic) are recruiting young people to be on a Youth Council for the IMPACT study.
The IMPACT study will follow Australian young people over five years and look at how current experiences of alcohol impacts their health. The study will dive into the nuances of what it means to have easy access to alcohol and how marketing and social media and cultural values influence behaviour and attitudes towards alcohol.
NDARC and YACVic will recruit a Youth Council of 12 young people (aged 15 – 18) with a diverse range of identities and backgrounds to help inform the project.
You will attend various meetings, trainings and co-design sessions throughout the study period. You will draw on your lived experience and unique perspectives, providing input and co-design on stages of the study points such as:
- Design of the survey that young people will complete
- Implementation - how to recruit and retain study participants
- How best to share results with other young people
Two Youth Council members will also be invited to attend the industry study advisory group, who will meet each year during the study.
We encourage participants to stay engaged throughout the five-year study, and ideally, we’re looking for a minimum commitment of around 12 months — though we understand circumstances can change and are happy to discuss this with you.
All workshops will be run online via Zoom.
The first training and co-design sessions are scheduled for:
-
Thu 12 March 5.30-7.30pm - Induction
-
Thu 19 March 5.30-7.30pm - Training 1 (youth-led meetings)
-
Thu 26 March 5.30-7.30pm - Training 2 (Introduction to research methods)
-
Thu 9 April 5.30-7.30pm - Co-design 1 (survey drafting)
-
Thu 16 April 5.30-7.30pm - Co-design 2 (survey recruitment strategy)
After that, there will be co-design workshops every 3-6 months, and informal catch up calls every 3 months.
If your application is successful, you’ll get an email from the YACVic team, where we will request a phone call to brief you on the role.
