The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is an Australian Government initiative that supports people with disability by making sure they get the right supports and services.
If you don’t know a lot about the NDIS check out our video. It features young people with disability talking about the NDIS.
The NDIS supports people to live the life they want. It aims to give people choice and control over their own lives – something which hasn’t always happened for people with disability in the past. It responds to people’s individual interests and goals. It supports young people to access education, work and social activities in the community.
The NDIS is based on an insurance model and works by building the capacity of both people with disability and the community. Through the NDIS, young people with disability have access to supports that they have never had before. They are now able to attend events, groups, clubs, youth centres, gigs and all sorts of activities. Youth services need to be bold and ready to actively include young people with disability.
What are your goals and how do you achieve them?
How do other people support you to achieve these goals? Friends? Family? Peers?
Think about how young people with disability are supported to achieve their own goals by the people around them.
What activities or events do you offer to young people? How can you offer these activities and events to young people with disability who are now supported by NDIS?
