The Opportunity

Youth Affairs Council Victoria (YACVic) is supporting the Department of Justice and Community Safety (DJCS) to improve the way they understand and work with young people. We are looking for young Co-designers to help evaluate, influence and drive the DJCS youth engagement strategy.

The work of DJCS can impact all of us, it includes:

  • The justice system

  • Personal records

  • Emergencies & incidents

  • Community

  • Family

  • Workplace

  • Infrastructure and road safety

  • Legal and consumer rights

  • Alcohol and gambling

All these areas can be significant in a young person’s life.

What does it involve?

We are looking for young people interested in giving feedback and improving youth participation in DJCS. Co-designers will take part in three guided online sessions, talking about how DJCS can listen to and communicate with young people better.

The sessions will be based on the following themes:

  1. Looking Back – Unpacking the work of the department and the experiences of the group.
  2. The Future – What would an ideal future look like? What changes can the department make? What should an ongoing advisory group include?

  3. Next Steps - Discuss some ideas and changes DJCS are considering. Talk through these ideas together.

The three sessions will happen throughout February 2021.

Please note that there might be some extra prep and tasks between each session.

We will make sure that all meetings and events are accessible and inclusive. We will also provide support during the meetings and events so that you can take part in a way that works best for you. Contact us on the details at the bottom of this page if you would like to know more.

About you?

We are looking for a diverse group of co-designers and we think most young people would have something to offer this project!

This would be a great opportunity for you, if you or someone you know well (family/friends) has had lived experience with the key work of the department. These might include the justice or youth justice systems (prison, community corrections or remand), the Sheriff’s Office, Victim Support such as giving evidence in Court, or accessing or changing your birth certificate.

For more information please visit  DJCS website

We are looking for a diverse group to help inform the department’s work, so you may be perfect for this role whether you have interacted with DJCS or not.  If you have had any form of lived experience with DJSC as well we would love for you to apply.

We encourage and will support young Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, young people with disability and young people from culturally and/or linguistically diverse backgrounds to take part.

What will you get out of it?

This a volunteer role. We will offer a Volunteer honorarium payment of $100 per attended session to thank you for your time and expertise (we may offer you extra payments if we ask you to do extra tasks)

This will also be a great chance to:

  • meet and network with other young people passionate about creating change.
  • learn more about a Victorian Government department and how strategic decisions are made.
  • work with the department and learn more about co-design and partnership work.

YACVic will be happy to offer a certificate of attendance and/or act as a referee on your resume.
