Contibuted By: Women’s Health Goulburn North East

It’s Real, an initiative of Women’s Health Goulburn North East with the Indigo Shire Council. It was developed by young people in North East Victoria who identified the themes of including identity, technology and relationships as being important to young people.

A short drama (18 minutes) featuring intertwining stories, It’s Real can be used as part of the Real Life program or as a stand-alone discussion starter. Bullying between friends, sexting and its consequences and behaviour in romantic relationships are all rich topics for both adults and young people.

For parents, educators and agency workers, It’s Real gives a glimpse into the lives of young people struggling with these issues.

Marginalised Young People, Surveillance and Public Space

YACVic and the School of Political and Social Inquiry, Monash University were very pleased to have Dr. Helen Szoke, (Commissioner, Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission) launch a new research report ‘Marginalised Young People, Surveillance and Public Space’ on the 1st of September, 2010. The report examines young people’s perceptions of surveillance and security in inner city Melbourne.

In her speech, Dr Szoke commented:"When I read the report, I was struck by how sophisticated the analysis is, which is in effect what we need when we are dealing with complex issues, where we are trying to address systemic problems with linear instruments."
