Review of Victoria's Child Protection Legislative Arrangements - 17-06-2010

April 2010: The Victorian Law Reform Commission was requested by the Attorney General to review Victoria’s child protection legislative and administrative arrangements in relation to Children’s Court processes, and to recommend any procedural, administrative and legislative changes that may minimise disputation and maintain a focus on the best interests of children. YACVic worked collaboratively with the Victorian Council of Social Service (VCOSS) to develop a submission to the Commission. Read YACVic and VCOSS's submission.

Submission in response to the Inquiry into Strategies to Reduce Crimes against the Person - 24-11-2009

November 2009: YACVic and the Centre for Multicultural Youth partnered to submit to the Drugs and Crime Prevention Committee's Inquiry into Strategies to Reduce Crimes against the Person. The submission focussed on the experiences of violence of 'vulnerable' young people in the community with a particular focus on the experiences of refugee and newly arrived young people. The submission also presents some isseus for consideration in developing strategies to reduce assault and violence.

Submission in response to the Victorian Law Reform Commission 'Supporting Young People in Police Interviews - Background Paper.' - 03-09-2009

August 2009: The Centre for Multicultural Youth (CMY) and YACVic submitted a response to the Victorian Law Reform Commission's Community Law Reform Project 'Supporting Young People in Police Interviews.' In 2008 the Youth Referral and Independent Persons Program, YACVic and CMY asked the Commission to review the role of independent persons in police interviews with young people. The background paper sought comments and views about how the independent persons scheme should operate in Victoria.

A response to the Drugs and Crime Prevention Committee Inquiry into strategies to prevent high volume offending by young people - 18-02-2009

September 2008: This submission brings together information drawing from the expertise of the Youth Referral and Independent Person’s Program, The Centre for Multicultural Youth (CMY), The Centre for Excellence in Child and Family Welfare and The Youth Affairs Council of Victoria. YACVic and CMY presented to the Drugs and Crime Prevention Committee in September.

Marginalised Young People, Surveillance and Public Space

YACVic and the School of Political and Social Inquiry, Monash University were very pleased to have Dr. Helen Szoke, (Commissioner, Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission) launch a new research report ‘Marginalised Young People, Surveillance and Public Space’ on the 1st of September, 2010. The report examines young people’s perceptions of surveillance and security in inner city Melbourne.

In her speech, Dr Szoke commented:"When I read the report, I was struck by how sophisticated the analysis is, which is in effect what we need when we are dealing with complex issues, where we are trying to address systemic problems with linear instruments."
