Summary Offences and Control of Weapons Acts Amendment Bill - 24-11-2009

November 2009: YACVic submitted to the Scrutinay of Acts and Regulations Committee to raise concerns about the compatability of the Summary Offences and Control of Weapons Acts Amendment Bill with the Victorian Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities. The Bill seeks to grant police 'move-on' powers and to extend police search powers.

Graffiti Prevention Exposure Draft - 30-01-2009

February 2007: The Department of Justice released the Graffiti Prevention Exposure Draft, proposing tough new Graffiti Laws. These would give Police new search powers, create new stand-alone graffiti offences, allow for young people to be detained without arrest for the purposes of search and reverse the burden of proof in relation to a minor offence that the Exposure Draft proposes to create. YACVic has serious concerns about the potential impact that the proposals made in this Exposure Draft on young people.

Space Invaders? Young People and Public Space - 14-01-2009

June 2005: This report documents the proceedings of the Space Invaders? Young people and public space forum hosted in June 2005 by the Youth Affairs Council of Victoria in partnership with members of the Public Space Action Group, a network of organisations advocating for young people’s equitable access to public space. The forum brought together young people, youth service providers, academics, representatives from local and State Government, and other members of the community sector to explore the issue of young people and public space and to inform the Public Space Action Group of how to direct its advocacy efforts.

A Good Night for All: Improving Saftey and Security in the Inner City - 14-01-2009

April 2005: The Inner City Entertainment Precinct Taskforce recently presented a discussion paper presenting some options to address public safety and security in Melbourne’s inner city entertainment precincts. YACVic responded to the discussion paper by writing two submissions, one an internal YACVIC submission and one based on a focus group of young people hosted by YACVic and the Office for Youth.

Marginalised Young People, Surveillance and Public Space

YACVic and the School of Political and Social Inquiry, Monash University were very pleased to have Dr. Helen Szoke, (Commissioner, Victorian Equal Opportunity and Human Rights Commission) launch a new research report ‘Marginalised Young People, Surveillance and Public Space’ on the 1st of September, 2010. The report examines young people’s perceptions of surveillance and security in inner city Melbourne.

In her speech, Dr Szoke commented:"When I read the report, I was struck by how sophisticated the analysis is, which is in effect what we need when we are dealing with complex issues, where we are trying to address systemic problems with linear instruments."
