Yet another blow to young people in country Victoria - State Government
drops funding to drug and alcohol free youth events
The Bracks Government has backed down on it's commitment to fully fund
it's youth events program, FReeZA, Youth Affairs Council of Victoria Inc.
(YACVic) Executive Officer Janet Jukes said today.
FReeZA is a program that provides small grants for local communities of
young people to plan and implement all ages, drug & alcohol free events
that feature live bands and dance parties across Victoria.
"The government has cut this program by almost a third over six
months, reducing the ability of young people to organise and attend drug
and alcohol free events. Added to this cut is the uncertainty of funding
after the next budget," Ms Jukes said.
Boredom is a major issue for young people in small towns and centres,
with high unemployment and limited recreational opportunities. The FReeZA
program with its community development focus has made a positive impact
on these issues.
"The worry is what will happen to young people when the number of
FreeZA events is cut back, particularly in country Victoria and outer
suburban areas of Melbourne where there is a serious lack of drug and
alcohol free entertainment for young people" Ms Jukes said.
"The importance of FReeZA goes beyond the event," said Ms Jukes,
"by involving young people to participate in the organisation of
events through FReeZA committees young people are able to develop their
management skills and confidence. It also helps develop partnerships in
local communities and gives young people a greater sense of connectedness."
A telephone survey conducted by YACVic found that the overwhelming response
from FReeZA providers across the state is that this funding shortfall
will have a significant effect on the program. Over 50% of those surveyed
will have to reduce the number of events they put on over the next six
months and the burden of extra costs will be shifted further onto local
service agencies and charitable organisations.
"This cut to FReeZA has been made despite recommendations by a government
initiated evaluation of the program to increase funding, it's ludicrous
that the Government would cut such a successful program".
The Youth Affairs Council of Victoria, is the peak body and leading policy
advocate for youth issues in Victoria. We have a membership of around
500 organisations and individuals.
