Youth Affairs Council of Victoria welcomes Liana Buchanan as new Commissioner for Children and Young People
23 February 2016: The state’s peak body for young people and youth services today welcomes the appointment of Liana Buchanan as the new Principal Commissioner for Children and Young People in Victoria.
In her roles as Executive Officer for the Federation of Community Legal Centres and as commissioner with the Victorian Law Reform Commission, Ms Buchanan has proved to be a fantastic advocate for the rights of young people in Victoria. Her appointment to the role of Commissioner will be welcomed and celebrated across many sectors.
“We’re very excited to work with Liana towards better protection of Victoria’s vulnerable children and young people, and improved outcomes for all children and young people in Victoria,” says Youth Affairs Council of Victoria (YACVic) CEO Georgie Ferrari.
YACVic also welcomes the announcement of increased powers for The Commission and hopes this will improve the policies and practices of government and community services working with children and young people.
“YACVic has long advocated for the commission to have greater powers and scope relating to the safety and wellbeing of young people, and in particular those who are vulnerable,” says Ms Ferrari. “We’re confident the new reportable conduct scheme will see positive changes in this respect and we look forward to working with the new Principal Commissioner to implement this reform.”
