Suspension of underage events an over-reaction
The Youth Affairs Council of Victoria today criticised the suspension
of underage events in the CBD of Melbourne.
The suspension came after what Victoria Police have called a number of
incidents of concern at these events. Liquor Licensing Victoria, who have
instigated the suspension have not indicated when it might be lifted.
YACVic Executive Officer Georgie Ferrari said today “this seems
to be an extraordinary step to take, to ban all events in the CBD, over
one or two incidents and the actions of only a few”.
Underage gigs have taken place in the CBD and other parts of Melbourne
and Victoria for many years and have largely been incident free. “To
take this decision now, in the lead up to the holiday period for young
people will deprive many young people of the opportunity to recreate in
the city”.
While the safety and security of all young people at these events is
vital YACVic believes there are alternative ways of solving the problems
that have occurred, rather than punishing all young people for the actions
of a few.
YACVic will be working closely with the Office for Youth, the City of
Melbourne, Victoria Police and Liquor Licensing Victoria to ensure that
the suspension is lifted as soon as possible.
“Young people have the right to celebrate and enjoy the CBD, like
all other Melburnians and it is our responsibility to ensure they can
do that in safe environments” Ms Ferrari said.
